ICIRR APPLAUDS SENATE BIPARTISAN SUPPORT IN PASSING HIGHWAY SAFETY LEGISLATION

Today the Senate passed SB 957 by 41-14-1. The following is a statement by the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) congratulates Senate President John Cullerton and cosponsors:  Senators John Miller, Ron Sandack, and Tom Johnson for their leadership and bipartisan spirit in passing SB 957.  This legislation will ensure that all Illinois motorists, regardless of their status, are licensed, trained and insured.

The November 6 election demonstrated the power of the Latino and immigrant vote, and the need for both Democrats and Republicans to work together to find sensible solutions to fix our broken immigration system. “The highway safety legislation is a good first step and proof that both parties can put the politics of fear and scapegoating aside and work on practical solutions that keep our roads and families safe,” said ICIRR’s CEO Lawrence Benito.

Additionally, the ICIRR will continue to work with Latino and immigrant communities to register, turnout and empower voters for upcoming elections.

The ICIRR hopes the same bipartisan spirit continues in the Illinois House, which has become a model for our great nation.
