The Brookings Institution just released a report entitled “Breaking the Immigration Stalemate: From Deep Disagreements to Constructive Proposals”. The report includes a section on recommendations for immigrant integration in the United States. The four main recommendations are:

  • The creation of an Office of New Americans (ONA) located within the Executive Office of the President. ONA would coordinate efforts between the local, state and federal governments with relevant voluntary and non-profit organizations to better facilitate immigrants’ assimilation and integration into American society.
  • The ONA office would support new approaches to teaching English, encourage funding of English language acquisition programs, and advance public/private partnerships that take advantage of new information technology.
  • Strengthen efforts to include immigrant parents in early childhood education.
  • Strengthen the incorporation of core civic principles and U.S. history into the content of naturalization preparation, English language courses, and educational instruction for everyone.
