This past weekend the Mexican community in Waukegan celebrated their independence day otherwise known as the Aniversario de la Independencia y el Grito de Dolores. The Grito (or, "shout") took place on September 16th, 1810 in the village of Dolores near Guanajuato, Mexico when Father Miguel Hidalgo called for the end of Spanish rule in Mexico.

Reflections on a Citizenship Workshop in Waukegan

On Saturday, September 21st, the Waukegan City Hall opened their doors to HACES and the Father Gary Graf Center for our New Americans Initiative Workshop. We were grateful to have such a wonderful space, and we were privileged to have the Mayor say a few words to the applicants as they were working on their applications. Over 10 volunteers helped nearly 40 people fill out their N400 forms.

On Sunday, September 15 I had a table set up at the Robert Crown Center for Evanston’s Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-off Celebration. It was a great opportunity to tell community members about the work I’ve done in their community with Uniting America.
