Citizenship Boot Camp
The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights' Uniting America Program hosted the first National Partnership for New Americans Citizenship Boot Camp Training in partnership with Unite Here. On Friday, December 9, folks from NPNA partnership organizations that work with immigrant communities from Washington to Florida participated in the first national boot camp training, an intensive workshop on organizing citizenship clinics, knowing how to properly assist in filling out documents needed to apply for citizenship. Presenters and trainers from partner organizations came in to teach trainees about organizing citizenship workshops. The following topics were covered: grant writing, citizenship program structure, citizenship clinic structure, unauthorized practices of law, Board of Immigration Appeals recognition and accreditation, utilizing different types of volunteers, outreach, and proper understandings of various important naturalization applications. From clinic structure to data collection, the boot campers were given a rigorous and intricate lay of the land on establishing citizenship clinics and programs.
On Saturday, after training the trainees put their new knowledge to work when they participated in Citizenship workshop at Erie Elementary School. Each trainee was able to work with folks applying for citizenship as well as helped in the actual questioning process of the applications. Folks applying for citizenship were greeted with smiles, and were provided with all the information they needed to begin the citizenship application process. With an ample amount of well-trained volunteers, the application process was smooth and precise.
