Uniting America

I attended an inspiring event at UIC on September 18 called “KIN-ETIC: Activating Asian American Students in Civic-Community Life,” which brought together college students, university faculty, community-based organizations, and activists to spark them into action in Chicago’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.

Citizenship Day was a blast! In case you didn’t know, every September 17th is Constitution Day, also called Citizenship Day, and is celebrated to mark the anniversary of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. The UA Fellows hit the streets of downtown to greet people on this special day.

For this blog I would like to discuss what I hope for my next HIV health fair will do, given the perspective I am still unable to confirm the location of interest at University of Chicago Illinois. Ideally what I would like to happen is bring a few LGBTQ organizations who work around HIV, whether testing, education, training, etc, and have tables at the student lobby on October 15, 2013.

As this year is approaching to an end, and as I reflect on how I developed as a human being as a result of this job, I feel deeply touched and privileged.  I also feel sad for my time is about to end. Who I was just a few months ago, and who I am now, is just not the same.

South Suburban Immigrant Project is planning on bringing Home/Land a play performed by the Albany Park Theater Project to Bolingbrook.

On Sunday, Uniting America, the National Slovak Alliance, Arab American Family Services, Bridgeview Community Center, and the Bridgeview Chamber of Commerce hosted Bridgeview's 1st Annual Multi-Cultural Fair.

I live in a vibrant sub-community of Wheaton, Illinois. Standing tall on a busy corner, my apartment building does not beckon a second glance. Yet, held within its cinderblock lives a diverse community buzzing with neighborly love. Though you could cover the globe with pins if you tried to map where all of my neighbors come from, a large portion of them are from Bhutan.

My focus for Uniting America has been to help change the atmosphere for immigrants in Chicago-land, but occasionally I get the opportunity to spread the mission of our program further.  The past two days, I have been attending the Advancing Justice Conference.  I have learned so much and networked with organizations from all over the United States.  I attended a seminar on youth
