The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) and the National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) are elated that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has canceled the process to build a new privately-operated immigration detention facility in Dwight, Illinois.
“This is a great day for immigrants and for our entire nation,” said Lawrence Benito, chief executive officer of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR).
The murder of George Floyd has sparked a national uprising unlike any we have seen in this country in many years. As an immigrant rights organization rooted in racial justice, ICIRR believes that Black lives matter.
